How do you build confidence in public speaking, even if you're terrified?

The short answer

Fear of speaking is fear of the unknown, plus fears of looking bad or making a mistake, most of them unfounded. You build confidence by practicing on camera, ideally with a coach, until the actions become second nature.

If public speaking terrifies you, you are not broken, and you are not alone. Fear of speaking is really fear of the unknown, mixed with a few related fears: looking bad, making a mistake, being embarrassed. Most of these are unfounded. The fight-or-flight part of the brain is built to look for danger, and it will invent danger even when there is none in the room.

Confidence is built, not born

The way to overcome it is to practice with a video recording device, and the best way to practice is with a coach who can guide you and get you to your destination even faster. Confidence in anything is built by doing the actions over and over until they become second nature. Speaking is no different.

The practical loop

Each rep shrinks the unknown. After a handful, your brain stops treating the stage as a threat, because you have proof you can do it well.
